10 EXPERIENCES YOU CAN ONLY HAVE IN NEW ZEALAND

10 EXPERIENCES YOU CAN ONLY HAVE IN NEW ZEALAND

NEW ZEALAND. Also known as Aotearoa. Also known as that place that looks like Middle Earth.

Nobody needs convincing that New Zealand is one of the most geographically unique places in the world — the fact that it’s been isolated out in the southwestern Pacific for more than 80 million years should be evidence enough that what you’ll find in New Zealand, you’re not likely to find elsewhere.

And just to prove it: Here are 10 experiences to have in New Zealand that you can’t have anywhere outside the Land of the Long White Cloud.

1       Ski an Olympic-sized half pipe…in August

Just northeast of the “adrenaline capital” of Queenstown, the world’s greatest skiers and snowboarders find the only place on Earth to hone their skills in an Olympic-caliber environment during the peak of Northern Hemisphere summer: Cardrona Alpine Resort. This feature pretty much turns the mountain into an impromptu summer camp, as it has the only competition-size half pipe in the world that’s still operational in August.

2     Stand in awe of the waterfalls of Milford Sound

And the Devil’s Punchbowl. And Lake Taupo. And hundreds of other iconic pieces of naturally made magnificence that are simultaneously alien and spectacular to those of us not lucky enough to call the islands home (okay, and probably to locals too).

3       Witness the kiwi bird in the wild

The flightless, slightly sinister / slightly adorable bird is the country’s national icon, and is found nowhere else on Earth. The native Maori used to hunt them for food and use their feathers for ceremonial cloaks (kahu kiwi), but not anymore, as they consider themselves to be the birds’ guardians. And while you’ll be constantly reminded of the kiwi’s importance in New Zealand, taking a trip to Stewart Island or one of their other remaining habitats to witness them emerging at night is like staking out a snow leopard, minus all the deadly predatorial implications. (You can also find them in “kiwi houses” around the islands).

4      Live like you’re in Middle Earth

Probably the most obvious item on this list—Peter Jackson’s trilogy is definitely at least partially responsible for the recent uptick in tourism to the country—but nonetheless impressive and a testament to the country’s astonishing natural scenery. Perhaps the most recognizable is Hobbiton, which can be found in Matamata, a 12,000-person town on the North Island.

5   Seek out some seriously unique thrills

Like, say, zooming on the tallest tree-to-tree flying fox in the world. Or base jumping from the 600ft+ Sky Tower (seen above). In terms of the average country’s adrenaline level, we’d estimate New Zealand’s definitely in the top 3. And given the country’s adventurous pedigree (Sir Edmund Hilary and the inventor of the bungee jump were both Kiwis), it’s hardly surprising.

6    Mountains in the morning, beach in the afternoon

No part of New Zealand is more than 128km from an ocean—which means you can drastically change your climate (and altitude) in the span of a couple hours. Not to mention grab some unbelievable shots of snowcapped peaks looming over some not-quite-tropical-yet-still-incredibly-blue waters.

7       Eat at Fergburger

No, really. Eat at Fergburger. It’s like the In-n-Out Burger of New Zealand, except it’s not a chain, the burgers are twice the size, and it closes at 5am. They’ve got more than 30 different types of burgers—lamb, cod, falafel, and venison burgers included. It used to operate out of a random garage, but now you can find it on Shotover Street in Queenstown.

8    See plants you can’t find anywhere else

About 82% of New Zealand’s plants are endemic—meaning they’re found nowhere outside New Zealand. One of these happens to be the silver fern (seen above)—the country’s national plant (and the logo for the national rugby team, if you couldn’t tell).

9         Watch the world’s most celebrated rugby team

The New Zealand All Blacks. Maybe you’ve heard of them. Maybe you’ve seen them doing the haka—that ceremonial Maori war dance aimed to intimidate the hell out of the opposition. Rugby is New Zealand’s national sport, and they’ve won the Tri-Cup—basically the international Super Bowl of rugby (outside of the Rugby World Cup)—12 times out of the 18 times it’s been held. Pretty sure that makes them the alpha dog of the rugby pack.

10    Get outnumbered by sheep

3 million people. 60 million sheep. What that means: At any given moment, you’re outnumbered at a 20-to-1 ovine-to-human ratio. What that also means: In pretty much any given town, you can find some seriously delicious lamb chops.

After settling in in Canggu, enjoy a Djamoe class where you will learn about the history and practical uses of this ancient treatment and then have an opportunity to make your own healing creation. Djamoe is a mixture of traditional herbs and spices, which are used for healing and rejuvenation. Djamoe includes some mixtures that are drank and others that are applied to the various parts of the body. The Djamoe itself consists of leafs, roots, flowers and barks of significant trees. Over the course of many generations, the Javanese have conducted informal research through trials and experiences to discover the optimal uses of these herbs and spices. This method is popularly used by the “Keraton” royal family as well as local villagers, as these herbs and spices are consistently found throughout this Indonesian island. Overnight in Canggu

DAY 4 CANGGU

This morning, after a relaxing yoga class at the Waroeng Djamoe Spa, pay a visit to the Tanah Lot temple. The name Tanah Lot means “land in the middle of the sea” in Balinese, as the temple is built on a small outcropping of rock in the coastal waters. This intricate temple is one of the most famous in Bali and it is well worth a visit. It is one of seven sea temples that dot the coast of Bali and it is one of Bali’s most photographed attractions. The most important gallery here is the Njana Tilem Gallery, founded by the son of Bali’s master woodcarver, Ida Bagus Njana. A few doors down is the Ketut Puja Gallery, founded by his apprentices. Depending on your interests, you may also wish to visit the stone carving town of Batubulan or several of the studios of prominent traditional painters in Batuan. Conclude the day with a visit to the Monkey Forest; as its name suggests it is home to a playful group of monkeys. Though visitors are discouraged from feeding them, the monkeys seem to know that most people can be persuaded to hand over a peanut or other tasty morsel. In the evening, you will see a dance performance at Ubud Palace. Overnight in Ubud

DAY 8 UBUD

Breakfast at your hotel then use the day today to relax in your hotel. Today by special arrangement, we have set up readings with the world-famous Ketut Liyer, the Balian featured in Eat, Pray, Love. Money

Australia’s currency is Australian Dollars (AUD) and currency exchange is available at banks, hotels and international airports. The most commonly accepted credit cards are American Express, Bankcard, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa, JCB and their affiliates.

Goods and Services Tax

Australia has a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10 per cent. You may be able to claim a refund of the GST paid on goods bought here if you have spent AUD$300 or more in one store, no more than 30 days before departing Australia. Tourist Refund Scheme facilities are located in the departure area of international terminals.

Shopping

You’ll find large department stores, arcades, malls, gift and souvenir across Australia. Trading hours vary across the country but shops in tourist and city areas are generally open until 6pm, with the exception of late night shopping on either Thursdays or Fridays in different states. In Australia you are covered by Australia’s consumer protection laws which require businesses to treat you fairly.

Tipping and bargaining

Hotels and restaurants do not add service charges to your bill. In up market restaurants, it is usual to tip waiters up to ten per cent of the bill for good service. However, tipping is always your choice. It is not custom to bargain in Australia.

Surf and water safety

Australia’s popular beaches are usually patrolled by volunteer lifesavers from October to April and red and yellow flags mark the safest area for swimming.

Electrical power points

Australia’s electrical current is 220 – 240 volts, AC 50Hz. The Australian three-pin power outlet is different from some other countries, so you may need an adaptor.

Australia’s country code is 61. Local calls from public pay phones are untimed and charged at AUD$.050. Mobile, long distance and overseas calls are usually timed. Mobile phone network coverage is available across Australia, however coverage may be limited in some remote areas. Internet access is widely available at internet cafes, accommodation and libraries.

Founded in 1926 by the Peruvian archaeologist, Rafael Larco Herrera, the museum holds one of the world’s greatest collections of pre-Columbian masterpieces and a stunning exhibition of gold and priceless jewels. Continue to the colonial center of Lima, with its historic buildings surrounding the splendid Plaza Mayor, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. View the impressive Palace of the Archbishop with its fine carved balcony, the opulent Government Palace, official residence of the President, and the 16th century Cathedral of Lima whose first stone was laid by the conquistador Ferdinand Pizarro. Tonight, a festive Welcome Dinner with your fellow travelers celebrates your arrival in Peru

DAY 3, Saturday or Monday – Fly to Arequipa
Depart Lima this morning by flight to Arequipa, the remarkable colonial city in the desert mountains of the Andes, surrounded by three imposing volcanoes. The city’s remote location has allowed its Spanish-based culture to thrive with little outside influence. Superb examples of Spanish colonial architecture can be found throughout the center of the city with some of the ancient houses now completely refurbished, serving as living museums. Spend the rest of the day discovering this delightful city on your own. This evening, a delectable dinner together at the hotel restaurant
Overnight: Hotel Libertador, Arequipa
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

DAY 4, Sunday or Tuesday – Explore Arequipa & Drive through the Andean Hills to Colca
Awake this morning in this city glowing with sillar, a white volcanic rock used in the construction of most of the buildings. The shimmering stone lends a bright air to the streets, earning the city its nickname of “La Ciudad Blanca,” (the White City.) You’ll visit 16th-century structures in the historic Plaza de Armas including La Iglesia de la Compañía, known for its beautiful wooden altarpieces covered in gold leaf, and the huge Santa Catalina Monastery, beloved for its vividly painted facades, once housing the largest convent in the world. The sight of this gigantic cathedral with its dramatic walls, coupled with the ethereal image of the El Misti volcano rising behind it is indeed a spectacular sight. Walk the lanes of the bustling San Camilo Market, whose stalls overflow with colorful produce, vibrant textiles and unusual local crafts. Have a “taste of Peru” and mingle with farmers who cart in their harvest from the Andean countryside. In the late afternoon, drive to Colca. Tonight, enjoy dinner with your fellow travelers
Overnight: Colca Lodge & Spa, Colca
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5, Monday or Wednesday – Discover Colca Canyon
Unforgettable sights lie ahead today! This morning, you will see the dramatic Colca Canyon, reportedly the deepest in the world, thought to be twice as deep as the Grand Canyon. The Colca River has carved this geologic wonder over millennia and some of the terraced hillsides are known to pre-date Incan civilization. The Canyon is also home to the extraordinary Andean condor. Although the population of condors is dwindling in South America, at the Colca Canyon you’ll have the rare opportunity to see them soaring gracefully overhead on the rising thermals. The Colca Valley has been known by many different names including The Valley of Wonders, The Valley of Fire and The Territory of the Condor – and now it is acclaimed as one of the “Seven Natural Wonders of the World”. Journey past tiny villages with terraced farmlands on the picturesque drive to the town of Colca and may even glimpse shepherds tending to their alpaca, some descended from indigenous tribes such as the Collagua and Cabana. Upon arrival, settle into your luscious accommodations at the Colca Lodge. There’ll be time to savor the lovely amenities of the lodge and luxuriate in thermo-medicinal baths fed by hot springs. Tonight, turn your gaze upward to a clear and spectacular blanket of stars

DAY 6, Tuesday or Thursday – Visit Sillustani Tombs & Puno
Experience another day surrounded by Andean beauty. The journey takes you past tranquil Lake Lagunillas, home to a variety of birdlife, llama, sheep, and vicuña. Later on the scenic drive to Puno, you stop for a fascinating visit to the pre-Incan burial ground of Sillustani on the shores of Lake Umayo. The tombs on this site are built above ground in tower-like stone structures, which house the remains of nobles and complete family groups. These chullpas, sometimes more than 35 feet tall, are the vestiges of the Colla people, conquered by the Incas in the 15th century. As you arrive in Puno, your first spectacular view is of pristine Lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, sitting majestically at 12,500 feet above sea level, backed by the snowcapped peaks of Bolivia’s Cordillera Real range. At the hotel, enjoy the vistas of the lake from your water view room. Dinner together tonight, after an exhilarating day, at the hotel
Overnight: Libertador Lago Titicaca, Puno
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7, Wednesday or Friday – Explore Lake Titicaca Villages & Uros Islands
This morning, while other escorted tour companies focus on the lake only, we take time to explore the villages and culture around the shores which help to gain a greater understanding of day-to-day life in rural Peru on our visit to the nearby village of Luquina. You’ll meet a humble Aymara family and learn about their farming methods, local customs, daily struggles and share a specially-prepared farm lunch along with the family. Afterwards, in the afternoon a boat excursion transports you to the fascinating floating Uros Islands where the indigenous people of the area – the Uros – live on tiny islands that dot the lake. The Uros live very much the same as their ancestors did and still follow the ancient customs and traditions. These islands are completely man-made structures, using totora reeds from the lake to build the islands and houses. Return to Puno; the remainder of the day is at leisure
Overnight: Libertador Lago Titicaca, Puno
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 8, Thursday or Saturday – Visit Raqchi
In the morning, depart Puno and travel to the ruins of the 15th century Temple of Wiracocha in the archaeological complex at Raqchi. This is the largest Inca temple ever discovered, with external adobe walls of over 39 feet, considered one of the holiest sites in the Inca Empire. This temple complex lured worshipers in the thousands and was also used as a fortress and storage facility for weapons. Many compare this enormous site to an Inca version of the Colosseum in Rome. Today, the quiet town of Raqchi remains home to many farmers, ranchers and artisans. At the end of the day, arrive at your beautiful chalet-style mountain retreat in the Sacred Valley of the Incas for dinner and overnight
Overnight: Casa Andina Private Collection Sacred Valley, Urubamba
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 9, Friday or Sunday – Discover Chinchero and Ollantaytambo
Today begin the morning by meeting with children at a local school. Join a demonstration in the village by local women of the ancient art of back-strap weaving; you’ll learn the secret of these intricate techniques and see how the wool is colored with natural dyes. Afterwards, share your observations about the crafts demonstration at a typical Peruvian lunch before restarting the journey. For the last part of your day visit the impressive Inca fortress of Ollantaytambo, an ancient complex of temples and terraces towering high over the valley, the last stand of the Incas in their defense against the Spanish conquistadors. Marvel at the architecture of the Incas in this well preserved settlement, considered a living museum of 15th century life. Tonight, savor the serenity in the mountain setting of your chalet
Overnight: Casa Andina Private Collection Sacred Valley, Urubamba

Early morning transfer to the Sacred Valley’s Ollanta Station to board the Vistadome train that travels through misty peaks to the astonishing ancient citadel of Machu Picchu, the “Lost City of the Incas”, designated by UNESCO as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu was virtually unknown to the western world until Hiram Bingham’s re-discovery in 1911. View the unforgettable wonders of this 15th Century retreat, abandoned nearly 100 years later with the arrival of the conquistadors. See the highlights of the site including the imposing Temple of the Sun, the House of the Priest, the Sacred Plaza and the intricately carved rock likely used as a sundial by the ancient Incas. The images of this glorious monument to a lost civilization will be a lifelong memory. Return to the Sacred Valley in the evening; transfer to your hotel in the heart of Cuzco for overnight

Gather some of your travelling companions for an optional raft experience down one of the prettiest sections of the Colorado River or a scenic cruise on the lake, visiting magnificent Antelope Canyon. If you want to hit the water, go kayaking or fish for striped bass and bluegill in one of the lake’s glittering bays. Tonight, meet with a naturalist, your Local Specialist, for a fascinating slideshow about the ecology and survival strategies of the desert wildlife of the Colorado Plateau.

Meal(s): Full Breakfast.

Day 6: LAKE POWELL – BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK (2 NIGHTS)

Continue your journey into Bryce Canyon National Park, home to the world’s largest concentration of hoodoos, those towering limestone spires that rise majestically from the desert floor. From the rim of the amphitheater, gaze down upon thousands of pink, orange and yellow pinnacles, the result of millions of years of erosion. You may even spot one of the park’s bristlecone pines, the world’s longest-living trees.

Meal(s): Full Breakfast; Hotel: BW Plus Grand Hotel

Day 7:  ZION NATIONAL PARK SIGHTSEEING AND FREE TIME

Join a Local Specialist, and naturalist, from the Zion Canyon Field Institute, for a guided walk and introduction to the flora and fauna of the area. You’ll be amazed by the petrified sandstone formation of Checkerboard Mesa and the otherworldly Zion. The rest of the day is yours to immerse yourself in the surrounding beauty. Marvel at the graceful slot canyons, towering cliffs and awe-inspiring monoliths, all carved out over 200 million years from the orange sandstone. Stretch your legs during a stroll along the Virgin River up to the Temple of Sinawava to peek at the start of the Narrows slot canyon or hike up to the three Emerald Pools. Spot some of the more than 200 species of birds that call the park home. Or join a park ranger to learn more about the park on one of the many daily programs. This evening, share your adventures with your travelling companions at a festive Farewell Dinner.

Meal(s): Full Breakfast & Farewell Dinner

Day 8: BRYCE & DEPART LAS VEGAS

Head west and travel along one of the most expansive sections of interstate ever constructed as you wind your way through the Virgin River Gorge on your way to the flat expanses of the Mojave Desert and the neon lights of Las Vegas. Why You Need To Pack Your Bags & Go To Fiji

 absolute tropical paradaise

Some of the Best Snorkeling in the World

Fiji is made up of some 330 islands, making for ample opportunities to snorkel your way around crystal clear turquoise waters and view the colorful reef marine life.

Activities…

Hanging upside down while you glide through lush green forests? Sure, why not. They have that here in Fiji.

All the activities…

But why stop there? There’s so much to do in Fiji with the hot sunny days that seem to last longer the more you jam-pack into them. From water sports to on-shore excursions, there’s so much to do whilst you visit Fiji, like stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, boating, jet-skiing, zip-lining, and so much more.

“Fiji Time”

Welcome to a little concept the Fijian people like to call… Fiji time. It’s the island way of living. Forget the schedule or arrange itinerary, in fact, you’d better forget the concept of time altogether. Fijians like to do things without care or regard for the time, day, or even week. Things just… flow…

The fresh fruit is out of this world

Coconuts for breakfast…. coconuts for lunch…. coconuts for dinner…. dreaming of coconuts all night…. Oh yeah, baby! Coconuts.

Some of the Happiest, Friendliest locals in the world

“BULA!”, Fiji’s most audible phrase is the local’s way of meeting and greeting anyone that steps within a few feet radius. You will find it hard to find someone who doesn’t smile and wave to welcome you “home” to their island.

To Appreciate Nature in its Purest Form

Fiji was for a long time, an untouched paradise. While the Western World has now well and truly made its way to Fiji, there are still so many parts of the country (having over 330 islands does help) that are completely untouched, giving you the chance to appreciate nature in its purest form.

To Give Back

While the Fijian economy has come a long way over the years passed, there are still many families in remote villages living with very little. You will be humbled by the happiness of those around you.

Did We mention the activities?

So. much. room. for. activities.

To sit back, relax, and enjoy island life

If there’s one thing Fijians know better than anyone else, its how to live a life of enjoyment. You’ll never catch a local without a smile on their face, a warm and welcoming “Bula” or even inviting you into their home like an old friend. The best thing to do in Fiji is to switch off from ‘reality’ and enjoy the slow and steady pace of island life.
