10 Tips for Traveling Abroad

Planning to travel over seas? Make the best of your international trip with these 10 tips:

1. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date, and make sure it is signed and the emergency information is filled in.

2. Give yourself plenty of time to get any required travel visas.

3. Make at least 2 copies of your passport. Bring one with you, but keep it separate from the original and leave one copy along with a copy of your itinerary with family or a friend at home.

4. Get travel insurance that includes medical benefits.

5. Familiarize yourself with local customs and laws of where you will be traveling.

6. Register with the U.S. Embassy or consulate before you leave, and also keep the number of the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate with you at all times.

7. Learn enough of the language to at least ask for directions or help.

8. Carry some of the local currency with you, but not too much. You never want to travel with very much cash on you.

9. Bring any prescription medications in their original containers in your carry-on bag.

10. Schedule a doctor appointment about 6 weeks prior to your trip to see if you need any vaccines.

Of the few cruise line that offer “trips to nowhere”, they are all being cancelled as of 2016. Because of some changes in how ships are cleared into and out of the U.S., certain short cruises without a foreign port of call are now having to be cancelled. Some of the cruise lines that have offered the cruises to nowhere included Norweigan Cruise Lines and Carnical Cruise Lines. The cruises were typically 2-3 days long, and just sailed out into the ocean and back.

Cruise Lines Doing Away with Last Minute Discounts

Cruise lines have been giving last-minute booking discounts for years, to avoid sailing partially empty. But recently they have started to test moves away from that model. Royal Caribbean Cruises is the latest attempt by cruise lines to break the cycle of last-minute discounting to fill ships. Royal Caribbean Chairman Richard Fain said that as of March, the company had stopped cutting prices on last minute sailings for all of its brands, including Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. RCCL’s new policy applies only to North American itineraries and does not apply to two- to four-day cruises, where last-minute sales are very typical.

Other cruise lines, while stopping short of a pledge to discontinue last-minute discounting, have said they are doing everything possible to persuade customers to book cruises earlier. Fain went on to say that “last-minute discounts have a disproportionately large impact on sales efforts by the companies. They upset many of our most loyal customers by creating an uncertainty about the prices they pay.”

Taking A Look at Tasmania

Tasmania is an island off the South Eastern coast of Australia, separated from the main land by the Bass Strait. Tasmania is the name of the island as well the state. Sometimes referred to as the Natural State, or the Island of Inspiration, almost 40 percent of Tasmania’s land is preserved as a World Heritage Listed area. This temperate island paradise boasts 20 national parks, and the mild sunny climate makes this a prosperous region for making fine foods and wine.

The capitol of Tasmania is Australia’s second oldest city, Hobart. With the River Derwent running through it and Mount Wellington just behind, Hobart does not lack charm and beauty. Many of the historic colonial houses and buildings in Hobart have been preserved, and are now used as restaurants, art studios, cafes and boutique hotels.

Some of the most popular attractions in Hobart include:

•Bonorong Wildlife Center offers visitors the chance to interact with native animals, including koalas, Tasmanian devils, kangaroos, emus and wombats. Open year round, except for national holidays. Tours run twice daily.

•Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is located near the city center and is home to historic plant collections and a large number of significant trees, some dating back to the nineteenth century. Open year round except for Christmas day and Good Friday. Admission is free!

•Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is a great place to find out about Tasmania’s history, including its Aboriginal heritage. Also features traveling art exhibits. Open year round. Admission is free!

•Salamanca Place is Hobart’s entertainment hotspot, offering a wide variety of shopping, restaurants, galleries, pubs and nightlife. It is also home to the famous Salamanca Market, which is open every Saturday.

•Kayak tours are one of the best, and perhaps most interesting way to see Hobart. Dozens of tour companies offer these tours year round. Most are about 2 hours long.

•Walking tours can be a fun way to see this scenic city. There are many different tour options available, one to suit just about everyone, including historic tours, coastal walks, treasure hunts and ghost tours.

•Mount Wellington stands right behind the city of Hobart. When it is not covered in snow, there are many walking trails to explore its heavily forested slopes. Near the top is an enclosed look out which provides spectacular views of the city below.
Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs are located approximately 80 miles south of Hobart. The richly decorated cave is one of the few caves in Australia formed by dolomite. It began forming over 40 million years ago. Admission to the Cave Tour also includes use of the thermal springs pool, changing rooms, hot showers and barbeques for the day. Open year round.

Port Arthur Historic Site is the best preserved convict settlement in Australia. Every feature of this historic site has a story to tell. Besides the historic buildings, Port Arthur also features magnificent gardens, guided tours and a restaurant and café. It is open every day of the year, except Christmas.

The Cradle Mountain – Lake St Claire National Park is one of the most popular and beautiful natural areas in Tasmania. The park contains a network of walking trails and paths, many of them leading to lookout points with breathtaking views below. There are many picnic areas complete with barbeques throughout the park.

Vineyards and Wineries. Tasmania has over 60 vineyards and wineries, spanning over seven wine regions, mainly on the east side of the state. The wines produced in Tasmania include Chardonnay, Merlot, Riesling and Pinot Noir, just to name a few. Many of the wineries offer tours and free wine tastings.

TSA Hoping to Increase Expedited Airport Screening

The Transportation Security Administration is hoping to quadruple the enrollment in expedited airport screening in order to reduce randomly choosing some travelers for this privilege. TSA’s chief risk officer, Kenneth Fletcher, told the House’s Homeland Security subcommittee on transportation that the agency just enrolled its 1 millionth member in Pre-check last week.

An estimated 6.5 million travelers qualify for the Pre-check screening, which grants travelers the priveledge to keep shoes and jackets on and with laptops and liquids in carry-on bags at security checkpoints. With better marketing over a period of years, the TSA hopes to enroll another 25 million people in one of the variety of the “trusted traveler” programs. Nearly 2 million people fly every day, and travel surveys suggest as many as 36 million Americans would be willing to join for the $85 fee over five years, Fletcher said.

Tips for Traveling with Kids

Traveling with kids can be a very stressful experience, but it doesn’t have to be. With these simple tips, your family trip can be a fun and enjoyable experience for the entire family, creating wonderful memories for life!

Allow plenty of time. With kids in tow, it will take longer to get through airports, get checked in, bathroom stops, etc, so make sure to plan for it.

Travel during off-peak days and times. If possible, try to travel during the slower times, when the airports are less crowded and planes are not completely full. These are typically Monday-Thursday mornings, and not over major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas or spring break.

Use the bathroom. Make sure to have little ones use the bathroom before boarding the plane. Sometimes it can be a while before you are allowed to get out of your seat in a plane, or before the next rest area, so try to plan in advance.

Something to chew on. Bring something for kids to chew on or drink during take-off and landing, to help avoid their little ears from popping. Bring gum or hard candies for older kids, chewy candies or juice boxes for younger kids, and either breastfeed or give a bottle to babies during take-off and landing.

Keep a schedule. Everyone knows that kids are happiest when kept on a regular schedule. This also goes for vacations, the better you do with keeping the regular meal times and bedtimes, chances are the happier your kids will be too!

Comfy clothes. Whether you will be travelling by car or plane, it is always wise to wear layers of comfy clothes. Layers are helpful in case of temperature changes in the plane. Also make sure to bring a change of clothes for children and at least a spare top for adults, because you just never know what might be spilled or spit up on you!

Burn off steam. It can be tough for anyone to remain seated for hours at a time in a confined space, especially for kids! Make sure to give your children opportunities to run around, whether it’s at airports, rest stops, or even walking up and down the aisle on the airplane.

Keep them busy. Since the attention span of most young children is about 20-30 minutes, make sure to bring a variety of things for kids to do on a plane, or in a car, such as: books, coloring books and crayons, music CD’s and player, portable DVD player. Sometimes packing a few new “travel toys” can be a fun idea too!

Pack healthy snacks. It is important not to load kids up on sugar during long trips, as it just makes it harder for them to remain seated. Some ideas for healthy snacks that travel well are: fresh fruit (bananas, apples or grapes), veggie sticks, cheese sticks, crackers, dried fruit or cheerios.

Don’t over pack. Sure you want to be comfortable and have all the necessities for your family while on vacation. However, try to distinguish what is actually a necessity and what is not. You don’t want to be stuck lugging ten suitcases through busy airports.

US Airports Going More Automated

Most major airports in the US already have automated self check-in kiosks, and self check baggage options. Last Friday the Department of Homeland Security announced plans to install 340 more kiosks in U.S. airports to automate passport inspections. The program will be added to 20 more airports by the end of next year.

Currently the Automated Passport Control (APC) program is active in 24 major U.S. airports, which include: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Austin-Bergstrom, Boston Logan, Charlotte Douglas, Chicago Midway, Chicago O’Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Denver, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Houston George Bush, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis-Saint Paul, New York – John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix Sky Harbor, Reno, San Diego, Seattle Sea-Tac, Tampa, and Washington Dulles. APC kiosks offer a cost effective way of reducing congestion at international arrivals. The kiosks expedite the entry process for U.S., Canadian and eligible Visa Waiver Program international travelers by providing an automated process through arrival inspection area. Travelers using the kiosks typically experience shorter wait times, less congestion, and faster processing.

World’s Largest Underwater Tourism Site Being Built

Reef Worlds are creating the world’s largest sustainable underwater tourism site in Dubai. The underwater tourism design company has recently completed designing a completely revolutionary five acre tourism site, which is expected to become one of the largest dive and snorkel destinations in the world. The unique site is being designed to look like an ancient Lost City, with inspiration from the movies “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Avatar”. The “Pearl of Dubai” will quickly become a focus for International dive/snorkel tourism and habitat creation in the region. The company has plans to expand with waterfront resort developers from Dubai to the Philippines in places where tourism and regional habitat could use an immediate boost.

Visiting Australia’s Gold Coast

Australia’s Gold Coast stretch of coastal towns starts north of Surfers Paradise and stretches south to the state border with New South Wales in the south. The northern end (especially Surfers Paradise to Broadbeach) is more commercialized, with plenty of action for younger travelers. The southern end caters mainly to vacationing families. Away from the coast, the western side, called the “hinterland”, consists of mountain ranges covered with rainforest, much of it part of national parks.

The Gold Coast has a sub-tropical climate with plenty of sunshine year round, an average of 300 days a year! Summer temperatures range from 66 to 83 degrees Fahrenheit, and winter temperatures range from 48 to 69 degrees Fahrenheit, making this a great vacation destination!

The most popular things to do in this area include;

Beaches. There are approximately 25 miles and well over 30 beaches to see and swim or surf in. Almost all are patrolled by volunteer and professional lifesavers. Some of the best beaches include:

– Surfers Paradise has a long stretch of beach, with flags and patrols every few hundred meters along the beach.  Sure to find a place for a swim, but the beach right outside of Cavill Ave is generally very busy and packed with tourists, just walk north or south along the beach to find a (slightly) less crowded alternative.

– Broadbeach is about 2 miles south of Surfers Paradise and will generally have the same surf conditions as Surfers Paradise. The upside, however, is that it’s not that far away and nowhere near as busy as Surfers.

– North Burleigh is 3 miles down from Broadbeach (and over a small hill). It’s generally less popular than its bigger brother, Burleigh Heads, but a good place to go if there are winds blowing from the north as the hill provides a bit of protection. Although if there are northerly winds, swimming in the afternoon isn’t such a good idea as they’ll bring in the stingers.

– Burleigh Heads is only about a mile  south of North Burleigh and a nice beach with a large park and a hill that is good for picnics. There are cafes surrounding the beach and the hill cover means that this beach is usually pretty nice when there are winds coming from the south (whereas others like Surfers will be blown out and horrible).

Hinterland.  Referred to as “the green behind the gold” (a reference to Australia’s national colors – green and gold), the Gold Coast Hinterland is home to three national parks, numerous mountains, creeks, waterfalls valleys, and natural rock formations. The area is mostly covered in sub-tropical rainforest, but sections have been cleared for dairy farm land and wineries. The Hinterland is best seen by car or on a bus tour.
The parks include: Mt Tamborine, Springbrook, Numinbah Valley and Currumbin Valley.

The Gold Coast region is big on theme parks. Investigate ticket discounts before you go, as multi-park passes, combined travel and entry, and multi-day passes can usually be obtained at a discount. They include:

– Sea World is the oldest and also one of the most established theme parks in Australia. It’s the closest to heart of the Gold Coast and will be interesting for those who have a liking for marine animals. Lots of shows and live acts, and you could easily spend a day here without going on any rides. It still does have some thrill rides, with the corkscrew roller coaster, and speed water slides.

– Dreamworld is a traditional theme park with a popular tiger zoo and the home of the Australian Big Brother House. Bountiful in rides; thrilling and otherwise. Features a great little kids’ area with Wiggleworld. If you are in it for the rides, and not the theme, then this is the place to be.

– Warner Bros. Movie World is a movie themed park with Warner Bros. themed rides and Looney Toons walking around all over the place. It is the most themed of the Gold Coast parks. Pretty crazy rides but not as extreme as some other parks. Depending on your blood pressure this may be a good thing.

– Wet’n’Wild is a water theme park with a wide range of slides, a wave pool, ‘dive-in movies’ at night in the wave pool and even a river where you can just lie in a tube and float around and around! A definite must during the summer, though best left to a day that isn’t stupidly hot or the queues are just ridiculous.

– Australian Outback Spectacular has a new Epic Outback Show, complete with stampeding cattle, wild horses and an Australian Dinner.

– WhiteWater World is a newer water park next to Dreamworld, said to be just as good as Wet’n’Wild, if not better

– Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, originally famous for its bird feeding of rainbow lorikeets, this park has expanded to have a number of animal exhibits. Although the lorikeet feeding still takes place just inside the entrance, there are hundreds of native Australian animals on display in natural bushland and rainforest settings around the park. There are open enclosures where you can get close to the usual assortment of kangaroos, emus, wallabies, etc. There is also an abundance of dining and shopping options in this area.
